Kinja'd!!!

Given the, uh, previous body condition and KBB values, I’m expecting the next vehicle much sooner than expected. A lot sooner. If the damage to value is right, I’ll have a check instead of a car. We’re targeting a move in two years to the next, better and last house. We need a truck, or at least the wife thinks I need a truck. I’d love a truck in addition to a car and her vehicle and another car and ... well that’s what we all come here to talk and dream about, isn’t it?

Budget: $21,000

Wife’s requirement: Truck and with 4wd ability.

My requirement: A truck that can replace my Mazda-3s hatch. (HA!) Aaaand 4wd ability is a nice thing for the mountains we live near and freak snows .

Uses: A homeowner with kids will alway use a truck every other month to move shit and things and stuff too. I need kid space. I need truck bed.

Driving habits: I need to get something approaching miles-per-gallon. Although I drive 10,000 miles a year, it could go up to nearly 12 or even dare I say (gasp!) 15,000 miles a year, when expected job changes happen within the next 6 months. So, mileage is a very nice thing to have overall, but i ’m not bagging 25k miles a year.

Used is most likely the name of the game. My probability meter is pegging Tacoma so far but, well, let’s see what you all come up with? My first thought was about a Lexus SC300 but...it’s lacking a truck bed.

thanks for playing. Oh, if any of you work an auto showroom in Colorado, do drop a line here so I can swing by and see what you have to offer.

If you live in Colorado you are legally obligated to buy a Subaru. Which one is up to you. If you don’t have a truck, you can avoid a number of truck only activities (helping to move other people’s stuff, or cheaping out on delivery because you can do it yourself for less money but way more sweat equity).

Oooof. A Taco here in CO, you’ll be paying $21k for about a 2010 with 150,000 miles on it.

Do you need a pickup or would an SUV do? An SUV would be much better for kid duty.

-Truck
-AWD
-Badass 8 wheel setup
-Wife will love it(no she won’t)
-Buy anyway
-Wife leaves you because now you love the truck more than her
-Mary Truck
-Have awesome babies that have 8 wheels for arms and legs.

There’s only one real course of action here.

Not sure if your budget is firm, but if you have some wiggle room at $25k

If you’re not averse to black plastic, Avalanches are pretty cheap relative to Suburban/Tahoe/Yukons for 4x4/truck/family rigs, and while they aren’t great mileage wise, they’re not much worse than most crossovers.

Powerstoke. Might be able to find higher mile 6.7 but many 6.4 and 6.0s out there. Also 600+lbs of torque is amazing. Also never get stuck in snow

I likes a lot. New ones are my fav but too much $$. Old ones are holding value and kinda up there in mileage. Ill have to look at how they wear on. Wife hates the funky back. I dig it tho. Might be my future

In my neck of the woods a dealership was selling a brand new Ram 1500 4 door 4wd with the v6 for $25,000 because it was a year on the lot. Nobody wanted the V6 I guess, but for you it would make complete sense.

Have you perhaps though about a Ridgeline. the older ones still seem to hold their value about like a Taco or Tundra but maybe it’s possible to swing a deal. also mileage shouldn’t be too bad because reasonably sized V6.

Trailers can be your friend. Don’t forget about that option if you aren’t needing to trailer cars or haul skids of bricks and shingles.

And for what it’s worth, minivans with a 4' x 8' interior are ULTRA cheap and super useful, even just to have as a third/backup.

Our driveway is two Lexus GS sedans and a humble little $4k mint shape 50,000mile Uplander with class 3 hitch + 10' long utility trailer. The van itself can haul 4x8 sheets and a good bunch of up to 10' long 2x4's. The trailer is used more for demolition and dump loads. I have access to a G3500 GMC with a car trailer for anything else.

Just for a different angle on the truck thing. I had a mint Silverado long box, but it was useless to me so I sold it and bought the Uplander for what I need. Plus most all full size trucks drive like poop in my opinion.

Obviously this is the “doing it cheap” approach. lol.

How much truck bed do you need?

Maybe and Explorer Sport-trac?

If you can go without the truck bed and 4wd, you may want to consider the Mazda 5. It drives pretty much just like the 3 does.

Any of the V6 half tons should meet budget with 4 doors, 4wd, and decent miles. Or go 3/4 ton diesel because bigger cab, all the torque, and you enjoy absurd maintenance costs.

AWD Wagon. Problem solved. Magnum, Tercel, Volvo, Subaru, E Class, Jaguar... all have AWD options. I would even give a pass to the Flex, though it is not a wagon.

Bonus points for rear facing third row.

I test drove one years ago and it felt like Honda didn’t understand American ergonomics at all. Like they put an 8' tall 500lb dummy in the driver seat and built it all out around that. The steering wheel is absurdly thick!

Recommending an F-150 is like saying, “Michael Jordan, ever heard of him?” That being said, a crew cab F-150 with palatable mileage will easily land in your price range.

Ideally, a brand new 2001 f-150 is perfect. The later ones are too ginormous to wheel around town for me. More recent tacoma, canyon, frontier are my needs, honestly. If i did f150, it would be 2011 or newer cause of the mpg tech introduced. I like them though.
